This session explores how early childhood professionals can support families and partner with early intervention (EI) providers when a child’s screening results indicate the need for assessment.  Learn strategies for discussing assessments with families and engaging parents in EI services.  Participants will also identify methods to collaborate with EI providers when services are delivered at an early childhood site. Finally, participants will review the IFSP and discuss how it relates to their work with children and families.

Everybody knows North Carolina is the home of basketball, but the home-visiting rule described in this session is the Hoosiers Rule. That’s because a Tarheel by adoption borrowed the rule from the famous movie and applied it to home visiting, to make visits more collaborative and less prescriptive. Applying this basketball strategy empowers families and makes interventions more functional.

What does planning and developing a new subdivision of homes have to do with providing quality early intervention, Part C services?  Come and discover. This session will provide participants with the opportunity to understand coaching as an interaction style for working with parents in the context of home visitation. Participants will be introduced to the research-based characteristics of coaching and be able to identify the characteristics in action during a home visit. Participants will receive access to receive instruments from the coaching toolkit to use in preparation for home visits.

Join Rush and Shelden for in depth analysis of joint visits when using a primary service provider approach to teaming in early intervention. Participants will have the opportunity to use and take home a new tool for ensuring fidelity to practice while viewing video of team members on a joint visit implementing coaching and natural learning environment practices.

State Part C programs across the country are making child and family outcomes measurement more efficient, effective and meaningful by integrating the measurement process within the IFSP process.  This session will explore the ways in which outcomes may be integrated into the IFSP, and will include tools and resources that may be used to support the implementation of this practice.  Two Part C programs will share examples from their current efforts to integrate outcomes into the IFSP process.

This session focuses on using child and family outcome data to improve quality practices and results for children and families participating in Part C early intervention services. Two resources developed to assist states and practitioners will be shared: The Data Accountability Center’s model process for using data for local improvement, and a resource document that lists key quality practices that, when implemented, will have direct impact on child and family outcomes. Beginning with existing measures of family quality of life, such as the Beach Center FQoL, we developed a measure specifically for early intervention (0-5). Different from other tools, our Family Quality of Life for Evaluation and Support (FaQol) includes a section for the family to rate their child’s functioning. This session will describe how to use the FaQoL to talk to families about their quality of life and how to use it as a measure of the success of early intervention.

This session will examine the intersections between dual language development and developmental diversity. The session will begin with an overview of key research findings on young dual language learners. The overview will lead participants to understand how a child’s home language is a vital resource for future development. The session will then provide a summary of the research on young dual language learners who also present with disabilities/developmental delays. Implications for screening, assessment and educational services for children will be provided.
