In a span of four decades early intervention and early childhood special education have grown rapidly. During this period, the first formal early intervention services that were conducted in disused school buildings have blossomed into a continuum of services ranging from services conducted in purpose-built facilities to inclusive preschools. In this sharing, we will track this journey by (a) exploring the nature and context of early intervention and early childhood special education in the formative years of Singapore, (b) the current continuum of services from the point of diagnosis to the transition to formal education, and (c) current challenges and future direction for early intervention and early childhood special education in Singapore. From Singapore’s journey, lessons for the development of services for young children with disabilities internationally will be discussed.
